PTA Gala Dinner Dance 2010
The PTA Gala Dinner Dance was indeed an event to remember. The food was excellent, but most importantly the night was crowned with stars, including her majesty Queen ‘Masenate Seeiso.
People danced into the night (well almost all of them) and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Well done to the PTA, especially Miss Pheko for their organisation of the event. A significant amount was raised for the work of the PTA. Thanks to all those people who donated items for the auction.
Donation of Desks to Hae Learning Centre 2010
As a result of upgrading our school furniture, we have been able to donate many of our “old style” desks to the Hae Learning Centre. Founded by Mrs ‘Mabaruti Tjabane to provide education to the disadvantaged, sthe centre depends entirely upon volunteers who share the same vision as Mrs Tjabane.
Upon retiring as a teacher Mrs Tjabane threw herself into educating those who would not otherwise benefit from the help of teachers, such as herself.
If you are interested in further assisting the centre, either by donations or by volunteering, please contact Mrs Tjabane on 22 33 191

Whose Story is it Anyway?
On Friday May 14th, Class 1C performed an assembly entitled "Whose Story is it Anyway?" Under the guicance of their teacher, Mrs Chivese, the children acted out a story about a little boy who was celebrating his birthday by having a party. At his party he was very rude and selfish. Instead of thanking his friends for his presents, he could only find fault with the latter. As part of the entertainment, a magician performed some tricks. The Birthday boy was not at all impressed. However, the best trick of all was yet to come and, in orfdder to teach the selfish boy a lesson, the magician turned him into a rabbit! Please see Photo Gallery for more pictures.

Ten Ripe Mangoes by Class 2W
On Friday 30th April, Class 2W performed a play based on a story called 'Ten Ripe Mangoes' written by David Cobb. The drama centred around a little girl called Saffie who was told by her mother to take a basket of ten mangoes to her aunt. Throughout the journey, Saffie encountered many and varied situations that necessitated her making a choice or decision. The audience were challenged to compare these actions with the PYP Learner Profile that they are all familiar with. Which attributes of the Profile did Saffie display on her journey? Would each member of the audience have reacted in the same way or would they have displayed different attributes? See Photo Gallery for pictures of this assembly.
International Week
The focus of International Week this year (8th - 12th March) was the upcoming
FIFA 2010 World Cup Finals to be played in neighbouring South Africa
in the coming June/July. Football has the ability to transend frontiers
and language. It is an international sport enjoyed the world over. Each
class put together a collection of work and artefacts centred around
one of the World Cup Final countries and, at the end of the week, these
displays were mounted in the Hall for parents and others to enjoy.
On Monday 8th March, language workshops were held in Luganda, Welsh, French, Afrikaans and Arabic. We also learned about Belgium where Dutch, French and German are spoken and Brazil where Portuguese and indigenous languages are spoken.
On Wednesday 10th, Cuban sports coaches visited the school to teach basketball,
volleyball and boxing. Boxing was especially popular with the boys!
Also on Wednesday, we celebrated Moshoeshoe's Day (11th March) with a colourful
Class 6M Assembly depicting the journey of the Basotho to Thaba Bosiu,
King Moshoshoe I's mountain fortress, and the wise advisors who convinced
him to forgive his enemies, settle displaced people and try to live at
peace with aggressive neighbours. We learned that Moshoeshoe requested
a
British
Protectorate and how this enabled the Basotho to retain their own laws
and magistrates. As March 10th was Commonwealth Day, we also learned
how Lesotho gained Independence and joined the Commonwealth of Nations, as
well as information about the role played by that organization in the
modern world. See Photo Gallery
On Saturday 13th, we held our PTA International Fair that began with a Parade of Nations and continued with displays of Basotho, Indian and African dances, Tae Kwando, Music and Syncronized Swimming in the pool. The day ended with a students football match.

get what they want by bullying others. The play was adapted from an Indian
Folk story, giving the children a taste of the rich literary and cultural
heritage of that country. Please go to Photo Gallery for
more pictures of this assembly.

Wow, that tasted good!
'Pancake
Day' was celebrated at MEMPS on Tuesday 16th February, following the
Christian tradition of eating rich foods before the forty days of the
fasting season of Lent. Although popularly called 'Pancake Day' in the United
Kingdom and many other countries, it also goes by the name of 'Fat Tuesday'
or 'Shrove Tuesday', the word shrove being the past tense of the English verb
shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of confession
and doing penance.
However, on this particular occasion, the children were simply enjoying the fun of running races, flipping pancakes in a frying pan before indulging in a mega pancake feast! Around M2,000 was raised for the PTA by the sale of donated pancakes. More photos in Photo Gallery.
3M Look at the Learner Profile
On
Friday, 5th of February, 3M performed a drama to illustrate two aspects

They found they had more than enough for their own use so they decided
to share their good fortune with the Queen. They journeyed to the
Palace where they presented the Queen with a basket of fruit as a gift.
The Queen was delighted and touched and rewarded them handsomely for
their thoughtfulness. Go to Photo

5J Assembly on Children's Rights
As
part of their Unit of Inquiry on 'Making Informed Choices - Our Rights & Responsibilities,
Grade 5 pupils from 5J put on an assembly centred around Children's Rights.
As you can see from the Photo gallery of their assembly, their performance
made the point that every child has the right to be healthy, clothed,
fed, housed and looked after without being abused or ill-treated
in any way. They encouraged children to stand up for their rights and
not put up with any kind of bullying or anti-social behaviour from others.
They pointed out that all young people, wherever they live,
need time to learn and play and not be
made to work all day! Please go to Photo
Gallery for more photos.

costumes designed for the school are very smart. The costumes are striped
green, blue and white and have the Basotho Hat emblem in white on the
front. Each swimsuit, a one piece for girls and trunks for boys, will
be personalized with the student's name printed on them so there will
be no excuse for a costumes to get lost in the future! As an added bonus
these swimsuits look good enough to wear out as school as well. Order
forms available from the School Office.
