Early Years

At Maseru Preparatory School we have three foundation phase programmes, namely: Nursery for children aged two to three, Rising Fours for children aged three to four and Reception for children aged four to five. School starts at 8:00 am-1:45 Monday to Thursday but on Friday school ends at 12:20 pm. The foundation phase is committed to providing learning experiences for each student in preparation for the Cambridge curriculum. The focus is to provide a stimulating early care and education foundation which promotes each child’s social/emotional, physical and cognitive development.

Our curriculum ensures that students are driven by their interests to learn. There is a strong focus on social collaboration and working in groups, where each child is an equal participant, having their thoughts and questions valued. Children search out the knowledge through their own investigations using concrete objects.

Children are encouraged to use language to investigate and explore, and to reflect their experiences. The teachers are not the only givers of knowledge. They are listened to with respect, believing that their questions and observations are an opportunity to learn and search. Our environment is recognised for its potential to inspire children. Classrooms are filled with natural light, order and beauty. We have open spaces free from clutter, where every material is considered for its purpose, every corner is ever-evolving to encourage children to delve deeper and deeper into their interests. Our different areas provide students with authentic material and tools. We have adequate outdoor activities where students get involved in climbing, running, water and sand play. The teachers use continuous assessment and documenting to observe students’ progress.

We have interesting events during the year like International week, Christmas concert, Mothers’/fathers’ appreciation assemblies, movie days and Easter egg hunt day. When the school bell rings at 1:45, at the end of the day, some students go home and others remain at school in the aftercare program. Our Early Yearly aftercare facilitates stimulating routine activities, we currently have 41 students. This program is so successful that students don’t want to leave when it’s finally time to go home. The teachers are very vigilant during supervision and students become involved in academics in a relaxed, free atmosphere where learning is simply fun!
